Car transport to Geneva

940 kilometres to Geneva: one driving day. And the only destination where two systems apply at once, the Swiss vignette and the French Crit'Air.

Why this route

One driving day to a city enclosed by France

Geneva lies about 940 kilometres away. That is one long driving day through Belgium, Luxembourg and eastern France, or via Germany and Basel, which of the two depends on the time of year and the traffic.

Geneva is Swiss, but entirely enclosed by France. The airport has a French sector, the suburbs lie in the Haute-Savoie, and anyone living there crosses a national border daily. That makes it the only destination on this site where two systems apply at once: the Swiss motorway vignette at CHF 40, and the French Crit'Air sticker for the French part of the run and the French hinterland.

I arrange both in advance. The vignette because without one you risk CHF 200; the Crit'Air because it simply applies to Dutch plates and the fines there run from € 68 to € 450. Beyond that, Switzerland has no permanent low-emission zones like Germany and France, which helps.

Who sends a car here

Four situations where this works

Geneva is an international working city with the Alps an hour away. That produces two very different kinds of run.

A posting at an international organisation

The Palais des Nations, the WHO, the WTO and CERN draw people who stay for months or years. On a stay like that, having the car brought out costs less than long-term hire, and you drive your own car rather than whatever is available. For a weekend in France or the Alps, that car is the difference.

The ski resorts

Chamonix is an hour away, Megève and Verbier ninety minutes, Courchevel and Val d'Isère two and a half hours. For half of Europe Geneva is the gateway to the winter season. Anyone with an apartment there or spending a season has the car brought out rather than driving the outward leg themselves with chains and luggage.

Watches and Wonders

Every April Watches and Wonders fills Palexpo with the international watch trade and the whole city fills up with it. In that week hotels are booked as far as France and prices follow. Anyone wanting to be there with their own car books well ahead.

A second home on the lake

The shores of Lake Geneva on both sides of the border — Nyon, Montreux, Évian, Thonon — are second-home country. Without a car that is awkward: the distances along the lake are greater than they look and the trains do not always connect.

The route

Nine hundred and forty kilometres, in one day

Two stickers beforehand, and then a run that fits in a day.

  1. 01

Arranging the vignette and the Crit'Air

    Before departure

The Swiss vignette costs CHF 40; without one the fine is CHF 200. The Swiss e-vignette is valid immediately, so there is no waiting time there. The French Crit'Air sticker costs € 4.91 and applies to Dutch plates just as it does to French ones; without it the fines run from € 68 to € 450. I arrange both before we leave.

  2. 02

    Collection in the Netherlands

    Early morning

I collect the car where it stands, walk round it with you and photograph its condition at departure. On a run of 940 kilometres I leave early, so that arrival does not fall after dark.

  3. 03

    Through Belgium and Luxembourg

    ± 400 km

Via Antwerp and Brussels to Luxembourg and then into Metz and Nancy. As far as Luxembourg there are no tolls; after that the French toll network begins. Refuelling in Luxembourg makes a noticeable difference and sits on the route.

  4. 04

    Eastern France and the Jura

    ± 380 km

From Nancy on the A31 and A39 past Besançon into the Jura, then over the border at Bardonnex. The last stretch climbs and descends through the Jura, with a view of the Alps across the lake when it is clear.

  5. 05

    Delivery and the way back

    End of the day

I deliver to the agreed address, with both stickers arranged and photographs of the condition on arrival. Then I fly home from Geneva, which has several direct flights a day to the Netherlands all year. That ticket is in the price.

Practical points

Two systems at once

Geneva is the only destination on this site where the Swiss and French systems both apply. The CHF 40 vignette is needed for Swiss motorways, without it you risk CHF 200. The French Crit'Air sticker at € 4.91 applies to Dutch plates and is needed for the French part of the route and for the hinterland: Annecy, Chamonix and the Haute-Savoie are in France. Fines there run from € 68 to € 450. I arrange both in advance, because they are not interchangeable.

Switzerland has no permanent low-emission zones

Unlike Germany with its Umweltzonen and France with its ZFEs, Switzerland has no permanent low-emission zones for private cars. Geneva does have a traffic restriction during pollution peaks, based on the Stick'AIR macaron. That is not a daily situation but a measure activated when air quality drops; I check how things stand before departure.

The Swiss e-vignette is valid immediately

Since the digital version was introduced you can buy the Swiss vignette online and it is active straight away, unlike the Austrian digital vignette, which only becomes valid eighteen minutes after purchase. On this route that is welcome, because it means a last-minute run does not founder on this point.

Recurring events

Watches and Wonders fills Palexpo every April with the international watch trade, and that is the week when hotels are booked far into France. In December there is the Escalade, the historic city festival, with processions through the old town. The motor show that put Geneva on the map for decades no longer exists: the 2024 edition was the last.

Luggage travels with it

No trailer is involved, so whatever fits in your car comes along. For a skiing stay that saves a separate shipment for skis, boots and clothing.

Compare your options

The same car from the Netherlands to Southern Europe, three ways, three price tags. With a trailer, watch which one you are comparing: riding along on a scheduled line from depot to depot is the cheapest there is, but a transporter making the run for your car alone charges per kilometre and bills the truck’s journey home as well. Between those two extremes sits a factor of five.

Trailer transport

€675 – 4,500 excl.

± 10 working days, or 2–3

  • €675 – 850 if your car rides along on a scheduled line
  • But then you take it to the depot yourself and collect it yourself on arrival, ten working days later
  • If the transporter runs for your car alone, door to door, it goes per kilometre — open ± €0.95, enclosed ± €1.35 — and the truck’s journey home counts too. Utrecht–Marbella comes to ± €4,500
  • Luggage in the car usually not allowed
Busy motorway traffic, driving the whole route yourself

Driving it yourself

± €0.25 per km + your time

± 2 – 3 days of your own

  • You drive the whole route yourself
  • Fuel and tolls come to roughly €0.25 per kilometre
  • Plus a hotel night on the way and a flight back
  • And two to three days of your own time

Drive-it-Back

± €2,040 excl. for Utrecht–Marbella

± 3 days

  • One dedicated driver drives your own car, door to door
  • Half what a transporter charges to make that same run for your car alone
  • On the day you choose, not the day the line departs
  • Load the car with your own luggage

Travel expenses are calculated up front and included in the fixed price, with no mark-up.

Frequently asked

What people ask about this route

Yes. The CHF 40 vignette for the Swiss motorways — without it the fine is CHF 200 — and the € 4.91 Crit'Air for the French part of the route and the French hinterland, where fines run from € 68 to € 450. They are not interchangeable and I arrange both in advance.

Not a permanent one. Switzerland has no low-emission zones for private cars as Germany and France do. Geneva does have a traffic restriction during pollution peaks based on the Stick'AIR macaron; I check how things stand before departure.

One long driving day of about 940 kilometres. With an early departure your car is there the same evening. There is no hotel night in the price.

Yes. Chamonix is an hour away, Verbier and Megève ninety minutes, Courchevel and Val d'Isère two and a half hours. In winter I allow for the chain requirement on the mountain roads.

Yes. Évian, Thonon and Annecy are on the same run. Then the Crit'Air is the sticker that counts, which is exactly why I arrange it in any case.

By air from Geneva, which has several direct flights a day to the Netherlands all year. That ticket is in the price.
