Barcelona — Car transport to Barcelona

Car transport to Barcelona

1,500 kilometres to the nearest Spanish city, and one thing almost nobody knows: your Dutch plate has to be registered in advance before it may enter Barcelona.

Why this route

The shortest Spanish run, with the most awkward rule

Barcelona sits about 1,500 kilometres from the Netherlands. That is the nearest Spanish destination I drive: one very long day or two comfortable ones, and therefore cheaper than Valencia, Madrid or the south.

The route itself is favourable too. The AP-7 along the Mediterranean coast has been largely toll-free since 2021 from the French border, so the expensive tolling sits mostly in France rather than Spain.

But there is something about this destination that applies nowhere else and that regularly costs people driving down themselves a fine. Spain works with emission stickers, and they are not available for foreign vehicles. Barcelona goes further: it does not accept foreign stickers at all. Your plate has to be registered in advance on the city's ZBE website to get access. Anyone who skips that enters the zone without entitlement and risks a fine from € 200.

Who sends a car here

Four situations where this works

Barcelona draws a mixed crowd: second homes on the Costa Brava and the Costa Dorada, but plenty of business travel too.

A house on the coast above or below the city

Sitges, Castelldefels, the Costa Brava towards Begur and Cadaqués, or the Costa Dorada towards Tarragona: all within an hour and a half of Barcelona and on the same run. For anyone with a house there this is the logical delivery route, and at 1,500 kilometres the shortest Spanish one.

A longer stay in the city

An apartment in town, a sabbatical, or a few months of work. Your own car is more convenient and cheaper than months of hire, but it has to be there, and the plate has to be registered for the low-emission zone.

Trade fairs and congresses

Barcelona runs major international fairs all year at Fira de Barcelona, on Gran Via and Montjuïc. Anyone who wants to be there with their own equipment, or simply their own car, has it brought in advance rather than arranging something locally among tens of thousands of others.

The staging point going south

Barcelona sits on the coastal route to Valencia, Alicante and beyond. Anyone taking the car down in stages, or having something done on the way, can finish half of it here. Say so at booking and I plan it as one instruction.

The route

Fifteen hundred kilometres, and one administrative step

The drive is straightforward; it is the registration beforehand that makes this destination different from all the others.

  1. 01

    Registering the plate

    Before departure, not en route

Barcelona does not accept foreign emission stickers. Instead the plate has to be registered in advance on the city's ZBE website, after which the car gets temporary access to the zone. I do that before we leave. It takes a while to be processed, so it is not something you sort out on the morning of departure.

  2. 02

    The Netherlands to Lyon

    ± 880 km

Through Belgium into France, then via Reims, Beaune and the A6. Belgium is toll-free; the toll network starts at the French border, and that is where most of the tolling on this whole run sits. The junction at Lyon in peak hours is the only real hold-up.

  3. 03

    Lyon to the Spanish border

    ± 450 km via the A7 and A9

Down the Rhône valley and then west past Montpellier and Perpignan to the border at Le Perthus. On summer Saturdays half of France drives south along here at once; that is the day I avoid.

  4. 04

    The border to Barcelona

    ± 170 km, largely toll-free

The AP-7 along the coast has been largely toll-free on this section since 2021, which makes the last stretch both quick and cheap. From the border it is a little over an hour and a half to the city.

  5. 05

    Delivery and the way back

    Inside or outside the zone

In the city parking is scarce and almost everything is underground; give me the address and, if you can, the garage at booking. After delivery I fly home from Barcelona-El Prat, which has several direct flights a day to the Netherlands all year round. That ticket is in the price.

Practical points

The Spanish sticker is not available for your car

This surprises almost everyone. The Spanish emission sticker is not issued for foreign plates. In some cities you can use a German, French, Danish or Austrian sticker, but Barcelona does not accept those. There the plate has to be registered online with the ZBE in advance. Entering without valid access costs from € 200, and since 2026 Spain measures with roadside sniffers that register plate and emissions.

Recurring events

La Mercè, at the end of September, is the city's largest street festival and its patron saint's feast: days of concerts, processions and closed streets across the whole centre. Fira de Barcelona also runs major international fairs all year on Gran Via and Montjuïc, with the congestion and full hotels that go with them. I plan well ahead for those weeks.

The tolls are French, not Spanish

The AP-7 along the Mediterranean coast has been largely toll-free since 2021 from the French border to Alicante. Most of the tolling on this route therefore falls in France. That makes Barcelona better value per kilometre than the distance alone would suggest.

Delivery along the whole coast

Sitges, Castelldefels, Tarragona, and on the other side the Costa Brava towards Begur and Cadaqués. Anything within an hour and a half of the city sits on the same run and normally costs nothing extra.

Luggage travels with it

No trailer is involved, so whatever fits in your car comes along: moving boxes, bicycles, a golf bag. For a longer stay that saves a separate shipment.

Compare your options

The same car from the Netherlands to Southern Europe, three ways, three price tags. With a trailer, watch which one you are comparing: riding along on a scheduled line from depot to depot is the cheapest there is, but a transporter making the run for your car alone charges per kilometre and bills the truck’s journey home as well. Between those two extremes sits a factor of five.

Trailer transport

€675 – 4,500 excl.

± 10 working days, or 2–3

  • €675 – 850 if your car rides along on a scheduled line
  • But then you take it to the depot yourself and collect it yourself on arrival, ten working days later
  • If the transporter runs for your car alone, door to door, it goes per kilometre — open ± €0.95, enclosed ± €1.35 — and the truck’s journey home counts too. Utrecht–Marbella comes to ± €4,500
  • Luggage in the car usually not allowed

Driving it yourself

± €0.25 per km + your time

± 2 – 3 days of your own

  • You drive the whole route yourself
  • Fuel and tolls come to roughly €0.25 per kilometre
  • Plus a hotel night on the way and a flight back
  • And two to three days of your own time

What people ask about this route

You cannot get one: the Spanish sticker is not issued for foreign plates. Barcelona also does not accept foreign stickers. Instead I register your plate online with the city's ZBE in advance, so the car gets temporary access.

1,500 kilometres is one very long day or two comfortable ones. Which it becomes depends on the departure time and the day of the week; I say in advance which arrival is realistic.

In France yes, in Spain hardly. The AP-7 along the coast has been largely toll-free since 2021 from the French border to Alicante, so the last stretch costs little.
