Car transport
Car transport to Valencia
1,840 kilometres along the coast road that has been largely toll-free since 2021, and one week in March when you will not get into the city without knowing about it.
Why this route
Halfway down the Spanish coast, on the cheapest road
Valencia sits about 1,840 kilometres from the Netherlands: two driving days with one night on the way. It is the middle one of the Spanish coastal destinations, between Barcelona and Alicante, and it shares an important advantage with both.
That advantage is the AP-7. Since 2021 the coast road from the French border to Alicante has been largely toll-free, so virtually all the tolling on this run falls in France. That makes Valencia better value per kilometre than the distance suggests, and considerably better than Madrid, where the route goes overland.
What you need to know in advance is the low-emission zone. Spain does not issue its environmental sticker for foreign plates, and Valencia runs a permanent zone. Since 1 January 2026 every Spanish municipality above twenty thousand inhabitants must have one. I work out per destination which arrangement applies and register the plate in advance.

Who sends a car here
Four situations where this works
Valencia draws a mix of second homes, expats and people who spend a few months a year there.
A house on the coast or in the city
The city itself, the Malvarrosa, or the coast towards Cullera, Gandía and Dénia. For anyone with an apartment there, having your own car is the difference between being able to reach the Albufera or the interior and not. I take it down in spring and collect it in autumn.
Wintering
Valencia has a milder winter than the north and therefore attracts people who stay from October to April. Those are exactly the months when the route is quiet and the planning is simple, and when bringing a car down is cheaper than half a year of hire.
Las Fallas
Every year in March the city changes completely for a week. Across Valencia stand monuments the neighbourhoods build themselves, they compete for the best, and at the end all but one go up in flames. Anyone who wants to be there with a car has to have it brought in advance: the centre is largely closed that week.
The staging point to or from the south
Valencia sits exactly halfway down the coastal route. Anyone taking a car to Alicante, Murcia or further passes through; anyone driving in stages can finish here. Say so at booking and I plan it as one instruction.
The route
Eighteen hundred and forty kilometres along the coast
Two driving days, the second of which runs on the toll-free coast road. The first part sets the cost, the second the pace.
- 01
Registering the plate
Before departure
Valencia runs a permanent low-emission zone and the Spanish sticker is not available for foreign plates. I work out which arrangement applies to your car and register it beforehand, so we do not find out at a camera that it was not allowed.
- 02
The Netherlands to Lyon
± 880 km, first driving day
Through Belgium into France and via Reims and Beaune to the A6. Belgium is toll-free; the toll network starts at the French border, and that is where the great majority of the tolling on this whole run sits. The first day usually ends south of Lyon.
- 03
Lyon to the Spanish border
± 450 km
Down the Rhône valley and then west past Montpellier and Perpignan to Le Perthus. On summer Saturdays half of France drives south along here at once; that is the day I avoid, not the kilometres.
- 04
The border to Valencia
± 520 km, largely toll-free
The AP-7 along the coast, down past Barcelona and Tarragona. This is the section that has been largely toll-free since 2021 and that runs well. It is also the finest part of the trip, with the sea on one side almost the whole way.
- 05
Delivery and the way back
City, coast or interior
In the city parking is scarce and much of it is underground; give me the address and, if you can, the garage at booking. After delivery I fly home from Valencia, which has direct connections to the Netherlands all year round. That ticket is in the price.
Practical points
The Spanish sticker is not available for your car
The Spanish sticker is not issued for foreign plates. In some cities you can use a German, French, Danish or Austrian sticker; in others the plate has to be registered in advance. Since 1 January 2026 every municipality above twenty thousand inhabitants must run a zone, so this arises outside the big cities too. Entering without valid access costs from € 200, and since 2026 Spain measures with roadside sniffers that register plate and emissions.
Recurring events
Las Fallas is every year in March and lasts a week. The neighbourhoods build monuments of wood and papier-mâché, they compete for the best, and at the end all but one go up in flames. The centre is largely closed that week and the hotels are full. If you want the car brought around that period, plan well ahead and agree a delivery address outside the centre.
The tolls are French, not Spanish
The AP-7 along the Mediterranean coast has been largely toll-free since 2021 from the French border to Alicante. The great majority of the tolling on this route therefore falls in France, and the Spanish leg — over five hundred kilometres — costs almost nothing. That shows in the price.
Delivery along the whole coast
Cullera, Gandía, Dénia, and on the other side towards Castellón and Peñíscola: anything within an hour and a half of Valencia sits on the same run and normally costs nothing extra. Just say where the car should stand.
Luggage travels with it
No trailer is involved, so whatever fits in your car comes along: moving boxes, bicycles, a golf bag. For wintering that saves a separate shipment and nothing has to be left at home.
Compare your options
The same car from the Netherlands to Southern Europe, three ways, three price tags. With a trailer, watch which one you are comparing: riding along on a scheduled line from depot to depot is the cheapest there is, but a transporter making the run for your car alone charges per kilometre and bills the truck’s journey home as well. Between those two extremes sits a factor of five.

Trailer transport
€675 – 4,500 excl.
± 10 working days, or 2–3
- €675 – 850 if your car rides along on a scheduled line
- But then you take it to the depot yourself and collect it yourself on arrival, ten working days later
- If the transporter runs for your car alone, door to door, it goes per kilometre — open ± €0.95, enclosed ± €1.35 — and the truck’s journey home counts too. Utrecht–Marbella comes to ± €4,500
- Luggage in the car usually not allowed

Driving it yourself
± €0.25 per km + your time
± 2 – 3 days of your own
- You drive the whole route yourself
- Fuel and tolls come to roughly €0.25 per kilometre
- Plus a hotel night on the way and a flight back
- And two to three days of your own time
Monarch DriveDrive-it-Back
± €2,040 excl. for Utrecht–Marbella
± 3 days
- One dedicated driver drives your own car, door to door
- Half what a transporter charges to make that same run for your car alone
- On the day you choose, not the day the line departs
- Load the car with your own luggage

Trailer prices, September 2026: the line prices from one large Dutch car transporter's own route pages, the door-to-door price from a Dutch specialist in exclusive car transport's own rate calculator. My figure is the indication from the calculator above for Utrecht–Marbella, one way. All amounts exclude VAT so they can be read side by side. Travel expenses are calculated up front and included in the fixed price, with no mark-up.
Frequently asked
What people ask about this route
1,840 kilometres is two driving days with one night on the way, usually south of Lyon. At booking I say which arrival day is realistic.
You cannot get one: the Spanish sticker is not issued for foreign plates. Valencia does run a permanent zone, so I work out which arrangement applies to your car and register the plate in advance.
In France yes, in Spain hardly. The AP-7 along the coast has been largely toll-free since 2021 from the French border to Alicante, and that is over five hundred kilometres of this run.
Yes, but plan well ahead and expect a delivery address outside the centre. That week in March the city centre is largely closed and the hotels are full.
Yes. Anything within an hour and a half of Valencia sits on the same run and normally costs nothing extra. Give me the address at booking.
By air from Valencia. Direct connections to the Netherlands all year round, and that ticket is in the price.
