Car transport
Car transport to Cannes
1,320 kilometres, one driving day: your own car is on the Croisette before you are, and in May that is the difference between having a car and not.
Why this route
A small town that is very large for two weeks a year
Cannes sits about 1,320 kilometres from the Netherlands: one long driving day, no hotel night on the road, and therefore a route that works out better per kilometre than anything further south.
The rest of the year Cannes is a manageable coastal town of some seventy thousand people. But for a few weeks a year that changes completely: the Croisette fills, the Palais des Festivals becomes the centre of the town, and every parking space within walking distance is spoken for. Anyone who needs a car in those weeks has to have it there in advance, arranging something locally does not work.
One practical point that goes wrong on this route more often than people expect: France runs Crit'Air emission stickers, and those rules apply to Dutch plates too. Cannes itself is too small for a zone of its own, but you reach it past Lyon and Nice, and they do have one.

Who sends a car here
Four situations where this is the answer
On this coast the demand is driven by season and calendar. These are the cases people call about.
The film festival
The Festival de Cannes ran from 12 to 23 May in 2026, the seventy-ninth edition. For those two weeks the town is closed off, everything is full and there is nothing left to hire at a normal price. Anyone who wants to be there with their own car has it brought in advance, and not the week before, because by then the hotels on my route south are full as well.
Trade fairs at the Palais des Festivals
Outside the film festival the Palais runs congresses and trade fairs all year, of which MIPIM in spring is the best known. For anyone there for several days who also has to get to Nice, Antibes or Monaco in between, your own car beats whatever is left to hire locally.
The Yachting Festival
Every autumn the Vieux Port fills for the Cannes Yachting Festival. The same situation as in May: the town is full, the approach roads seize up and parking within walking distance simply is not there. A car that is already in place saves a great deal.
The ordinary season
And then the largest group: people with an apartment on or behind the Croisette who want the car down in spring and back in autumn. Outside May and September this route is quiet and easy to schedule.
The route
1,320 kilometres in a day
Short enough for one driving day, provided the departure is early. The only thing that can break this run is the day of the week, not the distance.
- 01
The Netherlands to Reims
± 400 km
Through Belgium into France. Belgium is toll-free; the toll network starts at the French border. This is where the distance gets made, and a late start is never recovered later in the day.
- 02
Reims to Lyon
± 480 km, most of the toll
Along the A26 and A31 towards Beaune, then the A6. The junction at Lyon in peak hours is the only real hold-up; I plan the departure so that we are past it outside those hours.
- 03
Lyon to the Côte d'Azur
± 350 km via the A7 and the A8
Down the Rhône valley and then east. On summer Saturdays half of France drives to the sea along here at once. That is the one moment this route genuinely jams. When scheduling I therefore look at the day first and the kilometres second.
- 04
Delivery in Cannes
Croisette, Palais or inland
On the Croisette itself, stopping is restricted and parking is dear and scarce; most apartments have their own garage with a tight entrance. Give me the address and, if you can, the garage when booking, and I will work out the clearance and the approach in advance.
- 05
The way back
Nice is half an hour away
After delivery I fly home from Nice-Côte d'Azur, half an hour's drive. Several direct flights a day, all year round, and that ticket is in the price, which is why this route is relatively good value.
Practical points
Recurring events
The Festival de Cannes ran from 12 to 23 May in 2026; that is the period when the town becomes unreachable and when a car already in place is worth most. The Palais des Festivals also runs congresses and trade fairs all year, MIPIM in spring being the best known, and the Vieux Port fills every autumn for the Yachting Festival. In those weeks the hotels on my route south are full too, so I schedule those runs well ahead.
Crit'Air applies to your plate too
Cannes itself is too small for a zone of its own, but you get there via Lyon and past Nice, and they do have one, in 2026 every French city above 150,000 inhabitants must. The rules apply to foreign plates. The sticker costs € 4.91 via certificat-air.gouv.fr; without one, or in the wrong category, the fine is often € 68 and can reach € 450. I arrange it in advance.
One driving day means no hotel night
Over 1,320 kilometres there is no need to sleep on the way. That takes a hotel night with secured parking out of the price, and it is why the Côte d'Azur works out better per kilometre than the southern Spanish coast.
Delivery along the whole coast
Cannes, Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, Mougins, Mandelieu, all within half an hour of each other. Delivery to another address along that coast usually costs nothing extra; just say where it should stand.
Luggage travels with it
No trailer is involved, so whatever fits in your car comes along. Suitcases, golf clubs, things for the apartment: everything you would otherwise have checked in on a flight or left at home.
Compare your options
The same car from the Netherlands to Southern Europe, three ways, three price tags. With a trailer, watch which one you are comparing: riding along on a scheduled line from depot to depot is the cheapest there is, but a transporter making the run for your car alone charges per kilometre and bills the truck’s journey home as well. Between those two extremes sits a factor of five.

Trailer transport
€675 – 4,500 excl.
± 10 working days, or 2–3
- €675 – 850 if your car rides along on a scheduled line
- But then you take it to the depot yourself and collect it yourself on arrival, ten working days later
- If the transporter runs for your car alone, door to door, it goes per kilometre — open ± €0.95, enclosed ± €1.35 — and the truck’s journey home counts too. Utrecht–Marbella comes to ± €4,500
- Luggage in the car usually not allowed

Driving it yourself
± €0.25 per km + your time
± 2 – 3 days of your own
- You drive the whole route yourself
- Fuel and tolls come to roughly €0.25 per kilometre
- Plus a hotel night on the way and a flight back
- And two to three days of your own time
Monarch DriveDrive-it-Back
± €2,040 excl. for Utrecht–Marbella
± 3 days
- One dedicated driver drives your own car, door to door
- Half what a transporter charges to make that same run for your car alone
- On the day you choose, not the day the line departs
- Load the car with your own luggage

Trailer prices, September 2026: the line prices from one large Dutch car transporter's own route pages, the door-to-door price from a Dutch specialist in exclusive car transport's own rate calculator. My figure is the indication from the calculator above for Utrecht–Marbella, one way. All amounts exclude VAT so they can be read side by side. Travel expenses are calculated up front and included in the fixed price, with no mark-up.
Frequently asked
What people ask about this route
Yes. 1,320 kilometres is one long driving day, so with a morning departure it is in Cannes the next day. That is also why there is no hotel night in the price.
Yes, provided you book well ahead. The festival ran from 12 to 23 May in 2026. In those weeks it is not only the streets in Cannes that are full; the hotels on my route south are taken as well, so I schedule those runs months in advance.
For the French cities on the route, yes, and the rules apply to Dutch plates. The sticker costs € 4.91; without one, or in the wrong category, you risk a fine from € 68 that can rise to € 450. I arrange it in advance.
Yes. Anything within half an hour of Cannes sits on the same run; that normally costs nothing extra. Tell me at booking which address it should stand at.
Usually not, but it has to be checked beforehand. Give me the address and, if you can, the garage, and I will work out the clearance and the entrance before we leave.
