Why this route

The shortest international run I drive

Düsseldorf lies about 190 kilometres away. From Utrecht that is two and a half hours on the A12 and the A3, with no tolls, no vignette and no overnight stop. Of all the destinations on this site it is the simplest run, and therefore the cheapest.

Which is exactly why I get a different question here than for Málaga or Rome. Not 'can you manage that', but 'is it worth it over such a short distance'. The answer depends on why you want the car there: for a single day you may as well drive it yourself, but if you are staying and the car has to be there without you losing a day to the round trip, this is precisely the run where someone else is behind the wheel.

The only formality is the Umweltplakette. It is compulsory for every vehicle entering a German Umweltzone, including on a Dutch plate, and Düsseldorf's zone covers the whole city inside the ring. The sticker is tied to the registration, not to the driver, so it has to be arranged beforehand.

Who sends a car here

Four situations where this works

Düsseldorf is close by, and that changes the kind of run. Less holiday, more work and trade.

Fairs at the Messe Düsseldorf

The Messe is one of Europe's largest exhibition complexes and runs all year. boot düsseldorf in January is the world's biggest watersports fair, ProWein in spring draws the international wine trade, and a full programme runs around them. In those weeks hotels are booked across the whole region as far as Cologne, and parking near the Messe is a problem in itself.

Buying a car or having one collected

North Rhine-Westphalia is the nearest foreign market for Dutch buyers. Anyone buying a car there can have it collected without setting aside a day: I go out, check it at the seller, photograph its condition and drive it back. At this distance that is half a day.

A business stay of a week or more

Düsseldorf and the Ruhr draw Dutch entrepreneurs and secondees. Anyone there for several weeks wants their own car on the spot without driving out twice for it. I bring it over and you fly or take the train.

Karneval and the Rheinkirmes

The Rheinkirmes on the Oberkassel Rheinwiesen in July is one of Germany's largest funfairs, and Karneval with Rosenmontag flattens the centre in February or March. In both periods whole parts of the city are closed off and arriving by car is slow, reason to agree a delivery address outside the closed area beforehand.

The route

A hundred and ninety kilometres, in half a day

Short, straight, and with no paperwork beyond one sticker.

  1. 01

    Arranging the Umweltplakette

    Before departure

The sticker is compulsory in every German Umweltzone, Dutch plates included, and is tied to the registration. Without one the fine is around € 80 to € 100. I check whether your car has one and whether the colour is right for the zone we are going to, and arrange it in advance if not.

  2. 02

    Collection in the Netherlands

    Morning

I collect the car where it stands, walk round it with you and photograph its condition at departure. That is the same procedure as on a run to Spain, even though this one takes a fraction as long.

  3. 03

    On the A12 and A3

    ± 190 km

Across the border at Elten via Arnhem, then the A3 past Emmerich, Wesel and Duisburg. No toll for cars in Germany. On weekdays the stretch between Duisburg and Düsseldorf is the busiest of the run; I plan around it.

  4. 04

    Into the Umweltzone

    Final kilometres

Düsseldorf's Umweltzone covers the city inside the ring, the Altstadt, the Königsallee, the Medienhafen. With the right plakette that is no problem; without it, it is a fine.

  5. 05

    Delivery and the way back

    Same day

I deliver to the agreed address, with photographs of the condition on arrival. At this distance I usually come back by train — Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof has direct services to the Netherlands — and that is in the price.

Practical points

The Umweltplakette applies to Dutch plates too

This is the most common misunderstanding about driving in Germany. The Umweltplakette is compulsory for every vehicle entering an Umweltzone, whatever country it comes from. The sticker is tied to the registration and not to the driver, so you cannot move one over from another car. Without it the fine is around € 80 to € 100. Düsseldorf, Cologne, Bonn and virtually every larger German city has such a zone.

Germany has no toll for cars

Unlike France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and Austria, Germany charges nothing for using the Autobahn in a car. There is no vignette and there are no toll barriers. That saves no time at this distance, but it does make the cost of this run simple: fuel and my time, nothing else.

The short distance changes the way back

For distant destinations I fly home and that ticket is in the price. Over 190 kilometres the train is faster and more sensible: Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof has direct services to the Netherlands. That is in the price too, so you see no separate line for it.

Recurring events

boot düsseldorf in January is the world's biggest watersports fair and fills the whole region; ProWein in spring does the same for the wine trade. July brings the Rheinkirmes on the Oberkassel Rheinwiesen, and February or March the Karneval with Rosenmontag, when the centre is closed off. In all those periods I pin the delivery address down precisely.

Luggage travels with it

No trailer is involved, so whatever fits in your car comes along. For a fair week that saves a separate shipment for materials or samples.

Compare your options

The same car from the Netherlands to Southern Europe, three ways, three price tags. With a trailer, watch which one you are comparing: riding along on a scheduled line from depot to depot is the cheapest there is, but a transporter making the run for your car alone charges per kilometre and bills the truck’s journey home as well. Between those two extremes sits a factor of five.

Cars stacked on a car-transporter truck on the motorway

Trailer transport

€675 – 4,500 excl.

± 10 working days, or 2–3

  • €675 – 850 if your car rides along on a scheduled line
  • But then you take it to the depot yourself and collect it yourself on arrival, ten working days later
  • If the transporter runs for your car alone, door to door, it goes per kilometre — open ± €0.95, enclosed ± €1.35 — and the truck’s journey home counts too. Utrecht–Marbella comes to ± €4,500
  • Luggage in the car usually not allowed
Busy motorway traffic, driving the whole route yourself

Driving it yourself

± €0.25 per km + your time

± 2 – 3 days of your own

  • You drive the whole route yourself
  • Fuel and tolls come to roughly €0.25 per kilometre
  • Plus a hotel night on the way and a flight back
  • And two to three days of your own time

Drive-it-Back

± €2,040 excl. for Utrecht–Marbella

± 3 days

  • One dedicated driver drives your own car, door to door
  • Half what a transporter charges to make that same run for your car alone
  • On the day you choose, not the day the line departs
  • Load the car with your own luggage

Travel expenses are calculated up front and included in the fixed price, with no mark-up.

Frequently asked

What people ask about this route

Yes. The plakette is compulsory for every vehicle entering a German Umweltzone regardless of the country of registration, and Düsseldorf has one. The sticker belongs to the registration, not the driver. Without it the fine is around € 80 to € 100. I check and arrange one if it is missing.

No. Germany has no toll for cars and no vignette. On this run you therefore pay only for fuel and my time.

Two and a half to three hours, depending on where the car is coming from and on the traffic around Duisburg. There is no hotel night, so it is half a day.

That depends on why you want the car there. For a single day you will be quicker driving yourself. If you are staying longer, or the car has to be there without you losing a day to the round trip, this is exactly what it is for.

Yes. The whole Ruhr and Cologne are within the same distance and normally cost nothing extra. Each of those cities has its own Umweltzone, though, so the plakette is just as necessary.

Usually by train from Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof, which has direct services to the Netherlands. That is in the price.

The other direction

And if your car needs to come back from Düsseldorf?

Bringing your car back from Düsseldorf costs ± € 460, against ± € 210 for the outbound run. Over this distance I travel to your car by train and those hours sit in the driver's fee; on the long routes I fly and that falls away. Otherwise it is the same trip, in reverse.
