Why this route

One driving day to Bavaria

Munich lies about 790 kilometres away. That is one driving day of eight to nine hours on the A3 and the A9, with no tolls and no overnight stop en route.

Of the four German destinations on this site it is the only one with a real season. September and October bring the Oktoberfest, in winter half the Netherlands passes through Munich on the way to Tyrol and South Tyrol, and in odd years there is IAA Mobility, the motor show that has been held in Munich rather than Frankfurt since 2021. That makes it a city where demand for this run concentrates into a few periods.

The formality is the same as elsewhere in Germany — the Umweltplakette — but Munich is stricter than Düsseldorf or Frankfurt. Here the green plakette is required, and there are additional restrictions on older diesel cars inside the Mittlerer Ring. I check per car what applies rather than assuming it will be fine.

Who sends a car here

Four situations where this works

Munich is both arrival and transit. For many people it is not the end point but the last big city before the Alps.

Skiing in Tyrol and South Tyrol

From Munich it is ninety minutes to the Austrian border and three hours to the Brenner. Anyone based in the Alps who does not want to drive the outward leg has the car brought as far as Munich or all the way to the chalet. In winter I allow for the chain requirement and for the days when the Inntal Autobahn is at a standstill.

The Oktoberfest

From mid-September to the first Sunday in October the Oktoberfest runs on the Theresienwiese. In those weeks the city is structurally full, hotels are booked far beyond the city and parking in the centre is virtually impossible. Anyone wanting to be there with their own car has it brought beforehand and agrees a delivery address outside the festival area.

IAA Mobility and fairs at the Messe

Since 2021 IAA Mobility has been held in Munich, in September of odd years, partly at the Messe and partly in the city centre. The Messe München also runs major international trade fairs all year. In those weeks the whole region fills up.

Concerts and matches

The Allianz Arena in the north of the city and the Olympiahalle in the Olympiapark draw crowds from across southern Germany and Austria. Both sit outside the centre and are easier to reach by car than by public transport, which is one of the reasons people want their own car here.

The route

Seven hundred and ninety kilometres, in one day

Down the A3 and the A9, with the sticker as the only paperwork.

  1. 01

    Checking the Umweltplakette

    Before departure

Munich requires the green plakette, and inside the Mittlerer Ring there are additional restrictions on older diesel cars. I check per registration and per delivery address what applies rather than assuming it. Without a plakette the fine is around € 80 to € 100.

  2. 02

    Collection in the Netherlands

    Early morning

I collect the car where it stands, walk round it with you and photograph its condition at departure. On a run of 790 kilometres I leave early, so that arrival does not fall after dark.

  3. 03

    Down the A3 to Frankfurt

    ± 460 km

Across the border at Elten via Arnhem, then the A3 past Duisburg, Cologne and the Westerwald to the Rhine-Main region. This is the busiest part of the run; I plan around the Cologne rush hour.

  4. 04

    Down the A9 through Franconia

    ± 370 km

From Würzburg via Nuremberg and Ingolstadt to Munich. Wide, fast and with long derestricted stretches, though in someone else's car I do not drive faster than necessary. This is usually the smoothest part of the day.

  5. 05

    Delivery and the way back

    End of the day

I deliver to the agreed address, with the plakette arranged and photographs of the condition on arrival. Then I fly home from Munich Franz Josef Strauß, which has several direct flights a day to the Netherlands all year. That ticket is in the price.

Practical points

Munich wants the green plakette

The Umweltplakette is compulsory for every vehicle entering a German Umweltzone regardless of the country of registration, and the sticker is tied to the registration, not the driver. Munich requires the green plakette, the strictest category. Without it the fine is around € 80 to € 100. There are also additional restrictions on older diesel cars inside the Mittlerer Ring; exactly what applies to your car I work out beforehand from the registration.

Germany has no toll for cars

There is no vignette and there are no toll barriers on the Autobahn. If the car goes on into Austria that changes: a vignette is compulsory there, and the Brenner motorway adds a separate sector toll on top. If the run continues beyond Munich, I arrange that too.

Winter makes this run different

For many Dutch travellers Munich is the last big city before the Alps. In the winter months I allow for the chain requirement on the mountain roads, for winter tyres, and for the Saturdays when the Inntal Autobahn towards Tyrol is completely blocked. That is planning beforehand, not improvising on the road.

Recurring events

The Oktoberfest on the Theresienwiese runs from mid-September to the first Sunday in October and fills the city far beyond the ring. IAA Mobility has been held in Munich since 2021, in September of odd years. The Allianz Arena and the Olympiahalle also draw crowds from southern Germany and Austria all year. In those periods hotels are dearer and I pin the delivery address down precisely.

Luggage travels with it

No trailer is involved, so whatever fits in your car comes along. For a skiing stay that saves a separate shipment for skis, boots and clothing, and nothing has to be left at home because it would not fit in a case.

Compare your options

The same car from the Netherlands to Southern Europe, three ways, three price tags. With a trailer, watch which one you are comparing: riding along on a scheduled line from depot to depot is the cheapest there is, but a transporter making the run for your car alone charges per kilometre and bills the truck’s journey home as well. Between those two extremes sits a factor of five.

Trailer transport

€675 – 4,500 excl.

± 10 working days, or 2–3

  • €675 – 850 if your car rides along on a scheduled line
  • But then you take it to the depot yourself and collect it yourself on arrival, ten working days later
  • If the transporter runs for your car alone, door to door, it goes per kilometre — open ± €0.95, enclosed ± €1.35 — and the truck’s journey home counts too. Utrecht–Marbella comes to ± €4,500
  • Luggage in the car usually not allowed

Driving it yourself

± €0.25 per km + your time

± 2 – 3 days of your own

  • You drive the whole route yourself
  • Fuel and tolls come to roughly €0.25 per kilometre
  • Plus a hotel night on the way and a flight back
  • And two to three days of your own time

Frequently asked

What people ask about this route

The green one, the strictest category. The plakette is compulsory for every vehicle entering the zone, Dutch plates included, and belongs to the registration rather than the driver. Without it the fine is around € 80 to € 100.

That depends on the car. Beyond the plakette there are additional restrictions on older diesel cars inside the Mittlerer Ring. Give me the registration and the delivery address at booking and I will work out exactly what applies to your car rather than assuming it.

Eight to nine hours, so one long driving day. With an early departure your car is there the same evening. There is no hotel night in the price.

Yes. An Austrian vignette is then added, and on the Brenner motorway a separate sector toll. I arrange that too and it is in the indication beforehand.

No. Germany has no toll for cars and no vignette. If the run stays within Germany you pay only fuel and my time.

By air from Munich Franz Josef Strauß, which has several direct flights a day to the Netherlands all year. That ticket is in the price.

The other direction

And if your car needs to come back from Munich?

Bringing your car back from Munich costs ± € 1.130. Going out is ± € 1.350, so the return works out cheaper: the last driving day ends at my own door, with no hotel night at the far end and no flight home. I fly out and drive it back to you.
