Why this route
The far side of Britain
Glasgow lies about 1,160 kilometres away via the Channel, further than Milan, further than Paris and back. One long driving day with the hotel night in Scotland, or the overnight ferry from IJmuiden to Newcastle and then three hours west on the A69 and the M74.
For Glasgow that second route is almost always the better one. The boat sails in the evening from IJmuiden, an hour's drive away, and arrives the next morning. That removes the entire traverse of England: no M25, no M6 around Birmingham, no hotel night in the Midlands. What remains is a run straight across Northumberland and the Southern Uplands, and that is some of the finest driving there is.
What you do want settled in advance is the low emission zone. Glasgow was the first Scottish city where the Low Emission Zone was actually enforced, from June 2023, and the zone covers the city centre. It is entirely separate from the English schemes: a car allowed into London is not thereby allowed into Glasgow.

Four situations where this works
Glasgow is a working city and the gateway to the west coast. Its visitors are more practically minded than Edinburgh's.
The west coast and the islands
Glasgow is the starting point for Loch Lomond, Argyll, Oban and the ferries to Mull, Islay and Arran. That is the side of Scotland where public transport stops entirely and the distances are large. Anyone heading there wants the car with them without spending two days driving to get it there.
Football
Celtic Park, Ibrox and Hampden Park all sit outside the centre, and after an evening match the public transport is packed and the last connection tight. For Dutch supporters spending a weekend there, their own car is the difference between waiting and driving off.
Concerts and festivals
The Hydro and the SEC on the Clyde are Scotland's largest venues. In January Celtic Connections fills the city with music from around the world, and in July TRNSMT takes over Glasgow Green. In those periods hotels are dearer and parts of the centre closed off.
Collecting or returning a car
A car that was in Scotland and has to come home, or a purchase from a dealer. I go out, check it at the seller, photograph its condition and drive it back, by boat or by road, whichever is quicker at the time.

Deciding the route and the low emission zone
Before departure
First the choice between the Channel and the overnight ferry from IJmuiden. I also check whether the delivery address falls inside Glasgow's Low Emission Zone and whether your car meets it. London's ULEZ registration requirement does not apply here, unless the route would go through London.

Collection in the Netherlands
Morning or afternoon
I collect the car where it stands, walk round it with you and photograph its condition at departure. On the ferry route that is later in the day, because the boat sails from IJmuiden in the evening.

The crossing
A night, or 35 minutes
From IJmuiden the boat sails in the evening and arrives in Newcastle the next morning, with the car below on the car deck. Via the Channel it is the thirty-five-minute Shuttle, and then another day and a half driving through England.

Newcastle to Glasgow
± 250 km
From Newcastle west on the A69 along Hadrian's Wall to Carlisle, then the M74 north through the Southern Uplands. About three hours, and one of the quietest stretches in Britain. In winter the M74 over Beattock can be awkward in snow; I allow for that.

End of the run
I deliver to the agreed address, with the zone access worked out and photographs of the condition on arrival. Then I fly home from Glasgow Airport, which has direct flights to the Netherlands. That ticket is in the price.
Practical points
Glasgow has enforced its zone longest in Scotland
Glasgow's Low Emission Zone covers the city centre and has been camera-enforced since June 2023, earlier than Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee. The Scottish zones are entirely separate from the English schemes and have their own standards, so a car allowed into London's ULEZ is not thereby allowed into Glasgow. I check per registration and per delivery address what applies rather than assuming it.
The overnight ferry saves the most here
Of all the British destinations, Glasgow is the one where the boat from IJmuiden makes the biggest difference. Via the Channel it is eleven hundred and sixty kilometres with a hotel night; via Newcastle it is an evening, a night's sleep and three hours of driving. That removes the M25, the M6 around Birmingham and the entire traverse of England. Whether it is also cheaper depends on the season; I cost both and set them side by side.
London's ULEZ registration usually does not come into it
For London a foreign plate has to register with EPC PLC beforehand, with a wait of up to ten days. That requirement applies only to the London zone. On the overnight ferry the car does not meet London, and via the Channel we normally go round it. Only if something has to happen in London does that wait come back into the planning.
Recurring events
Celtic Connections fills January with music from around the world and is one of the few large European festivals that runs in the depths of winter. TRNSMT takes over Glasgow Green in July. Celtic Park, Ibrox and Hampden draw crowds throughout the season, and the Hydro and the SEC on the Clyde are Scotland's largest venues. In those periods I agree the delivery address especially precisely.
Luggage travels with it
No trailer is involved, so whatever fits in your car comes along. For a trip to the west coast or the islands that saves a separate shipment, and on this route it also saves a second crossing.
Compare your options
The same car from the Netherlands to Southern Europe, three ways, three price tags. With a trailer, watch which one you are comparing: riding along on a scheduled line from depot to depot is the cheapest there is, but a transporter making the run for your car alone charges per kilometre and bills the truck’s journey home as well. Between those two extremes sits a factor of five.
