Why this route
Two ways of getting to Scotland
Edinburgh lies about 1,130 kilometres away via the Channel: the run to Calais, the crossing, and then the whole length of England on the M25, the M1 and the A1 north. That is one long driving day: nearly thirteen hours of driving, plus the crossing. The hotel night falls on the Scottish side, before I fly home.
But there is a second route, and for Scotland it is often the better one: the overnight ferry from IJmuiden to Newcastle. The car goes aboard, the crossing is a night's sleep rather than a driving day, and Newcastle is about two hours from Edinburgh. That removes the entire traverse of England, including the M6 around Birmingham, the slowest part of the southern route.
Which of the two it becomes depends on the season, on availability aboard and on when the car has to be there. I cost both and put the difference to you, rather than picking one myself because it suits me better.

Scotland is the kind of destination where people stay longer and where a car stops being optional the moment you leave the city.
The Highlands and the islands
For many people Edinburgh is not the destination but the starting point. Scotland only begins there: the Highlands, Skye, the west coast. That is landscape with no public transport to speak of, and the distances are larger than they look on the map. Anyone heading there who does not want to spend two days driving to get there has the car brought out and flies.
August in Edinburgh
For a whole month the city is one festival: the Fringe, the International Festival and the Military Tattoo on the castle esplanade, all at once. Hotels are booked months ahead, prices double and the centre is largely closed to through traffic. Anyone wanting to be there with their own car plans well ahead and agrees a delivery address outside the centre.
Golf and the east coast
St Andrews, Muirfield, Gullane: the classic courses lie along the coast east and north of Edinburgh, and are not practical to reach without a car. For a week's trip with clubs and luggage, your own car is the difference between easy and complicated.
Collecting or returning a car
A car that was in Scotland and has to come home, or a purchase from a dealer. I go out, check it over, photograph its condition and drive it back, by road or by boat, whichever is quicker at the time.

Deciding the route and zone access
Before departure
First the choice: via the Channel or on the overnight ferry from IJmuiden. I also check whether the delivery address falls inside Edinburgh's Scottish Low Emission Zone. London's ULEZ registration requirement does not apply here, so those ten days of waiting only matter if the route would go through London.

Collection in the Netherlands
Morning or afternoon
I collect the car where it stands, walk round it with you and photograph its condition at departure. On the ferry route that is later in the day, because IJmuiden is an hour away and the boat sails in the evening.

The crossing
A night, or 35 minutes
From IJmuiden the boat sails in the evening and arrives in Newcastle the next morning; the car sits below on the car deck. Via the Channel it is the thirty-five-minute Shuttle, and then a full day's driving through England.

Newcastle to Edinburgh
± 200 km
From Newcastle on the A1 along the Northumberland coast to Edinburgh: about two hours. This is one of the finer stretches of motorway in Britain and at the same time one of the quietest. On the southern route the whole length of England comes before it.

End of the run
I deliver to the agreed address, with the zone access worked out and photographs of the condition on arrival. Then I fly home from Edinburgh Airport, which has daily direct flights to the Netherlands. That ticket is in the price.
Practical points
The overnight ferry is often the better route
IJmuiden is an hour's drive away. The boat sails in the evening and arrives in Newcastle the next morning, and Newcastle is about two hours from Edinburgh. That trades a full driving day through England for a night's sleep, and removes the M6 around Birmingham, the slowest and least predictable part of the southern route. Whether it is also the cheapest depends on the season and on availability; I cost both and set them side by side.
Scotland has its own low emission zones
The centres of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee have a Low Emission Zone with camera enforcement. These are separate from the English schemes and have their own standards. For Edinburgh enforcement has applied since June 2024. I check per registration and per delivery address what applies, rather than assuming a car allowed through London may also enter Edinburgh.
London's ULEZ registration usually does not come into it
For London a foreign plate has to register with EPC PLC beforehand, with a wait of up to ten days. That requirement applies only to the London zone. On the overnight ferry the car does not meet London at all; via the Channel we normally go round it on the M25. Only if the delivery address or a stop falls inside the London zone does that wait come back into the planning.
Recurring events
In Edinburgh August is not a month but an event: the Festival Fringe, the International Festival and the Military Tattoo on the castle esplanade all run at once. Hotels are booked months ahead and the centre is largely closed off. Hogmanay, New Year, is the second moment the city fills up, and Murrayfield draws crowds from across Europe throughout the rugby season.
Luggage travels with it
No trailer is involved, so whatever fits in your car comes along. For a golf trip or a stay in the Highlands that saves a separate shipment for clubs, boots and clothing.
Compare your options
The same car from the Netherlands to Southern Europe, three ways, three price tags. With a trailer, watch which one you are comparing: riding along on a scheduled line from depot to depot is the cheapest there is, but a transporter making the run for your car alone charges per kilometre and bills the truck’s journey home as well. Between those two extremes sits a factor of five.
