Manchester — Car transport to Manchester

Car transport to Manchester

830 kilometres and a stretch of sea to Manchester. Without the ULEZ registration and the Congestion Charge that make London so laborious.

Why this route

Further than London, but simpler

Manchester lies about 830 kilometres away by road, plus the Channel crossing. That is a long driving day: the run to Calais, the Shuttle or the ferry, and then another three hundred kilometres up the M20, M25 and M6 to the north-west of England.

What stands out about this destination is what does not apply. The announced charge for entering Greater Manchester was not introduced for private cars; the plan was reworked into an approach without a toll. And the registration requirement a Dutch plate faces for London's ULEZ applies only to London. Manchester is therefore administratively simpler than the capital, despite being further to drive.

That does not mean I leave it to chance. British clean-air rules have been adjusted, postponed and revised several times in recent years. I check before every run how things stand at that moment, rather than trusting what applied last year.

Who sends a car here

Four situations where this works

Manchester is England's second centre of gravity, and the people who go there are noticeably different from London's crowd.

Football

Old Trafford and the Etihad Stadium draw thousands of Dutch visitors every season. Both sit outside the centre, the trains after an evening match are packed and the last connection is tight. Anyone there with their own car does not queue and leaves when it suits.

Concerts and culture

The AO Arena is one of the largest venues in Europe and Aviva Studios is the home of the Manchester International Festival, held in July of odd years. For anyone going several evenings running, a car on the spot is a good deal more practical than arranging it afresh each time.

Buying a car or having one collected

North-west England has a large and varied market, and for Dutch buyers it is worth the look. Going yourself means a crossing out, a long day on the left and a crossing back. I do that and you do not.

Work or study of several weeks

Manchester has one of Europe's largest student populations and a solid business core. On a stay of weeks to months, having the car brought out costs less than hiring, and you drive your own car rather than whatever is available.

The route

Eight hundred and thirty kilometres, and a stretch of sea

The same crossing as to London, and then another half day northwards.

  1. 01

    Preparation and checks

    Before departure

I check what applies at that moment to the route and to the delivery address. British clean-air rules have changed several times in recent years, and I do not go on what was the case last year. London's ULEZ registration requirement does not apply to Manchester, so those ten days of waiting play no part here.

  2. 02

    Collection in the Netherlands

    Early morning

I collect the car where it stands, walk round it with you and photograph its condition at departure. On a run this long I leave early, so the crossing falls well within the day.

  3. 03

    To Calais or Dunkirk

    ± 320 km

Via Antwerp, Ghent and Dunkirk to the coast. Belgian and French motorway, with French tolls on the last stretch. I plan generously for check-in.

  4. 04

    The crossing

    35 to 90 minutes

Thirty-five minutes on the Shuttle, about ninety by ferry. In a storm the ferry sometimes does not sail; then the Shuttle is the safer choice. On a run to Manchester that weighs more heavily than to London, because another three hundred kilometres follow.

  5. 05

Up the M6 to the north-west

    ± 330 km

From Folkestone on the M20 and M25 around London, then the M1 and M6 north via Birmingham. The M6 around Birmingham is the slowest part of the whole run; I plan around the rush hour rather than landing in it. Delivery to the agreed address, with photographs of the condition on arrival.

Practical points

No charge for private cars, but still worth checking

The announced Clean Air Zone with a charge for Greater Manchester was not introduced for private cars; the plan was reworked into an approach without a toll. That makes Manchester administratively simpler than London. But British clean-air rules have been adjusted and revised several times in recent years, so I check per run how things stand at that moment rather than assuming it is still the same.

London's ULEZ registration does not apply here

For London a foreign plate has to register with EPC PLC beforehand, and that can take up to ten days. That requirement applies only to the London zone. If your car does not pass through London, that waiting time plays no part here and a run to Manchester can be arranged at shorter notice.

Driving on the left over a longer distance

To London it is a hundred and thirty kilometres on the left; to Manchester over three hundred, much of it on busy motorways with a lot of junctions. That is exactly the kind of run where it matters whether someone does it once a year or more often. I take it more gently than on the continent, particularly on roundabouts and when merging.

Recurring events

Parklife fills Heaton Park in June, and the Christmas markets in and around Albert Square run from November into December and draw visitors from across the north. The Manchester International Festival takes place in July of odd years at Aviva Studios. In those periods hotels are dearer and parts of the centre closed off, so I agree the delivery address more precisely.

Luggage travels with it

No trailer is involved, so whatever fits in your car comes along. For a course or a longer work stay that saves a separate shipment, and on this route it also saves a second crossing.

Compare your options

The same car from the Netherlands to Southern Europe, three ways, three price tags. With a trailer, watch which one you are comparing: riding along on a scheduled line from depot to depot is the cheapest there is, but a transporter making the run for your car alone charges per kilometre and bills the truck’s journey home as well. Between those two extremes sits a factor of five.

Trailer transport

€675 – 4,500 excl.

± 10 working days, or 2–3

  • €675 – 850 if your car rides along on a scheduled line
  • But then you take it to the depot yourself and collect it yourself on arrival, ten working days later
  • If the transporter runs for your car alone, door to door, it goes per kilometre — open ± €0.95, enclosed ± €1.35 — and the truck’s journey home counts too. Utrecht–Marbella comes to ± €4,500
  • Luggage in the car usually not allowed

Driving it yourself

± €0.25 per km + your time

± 2 – 3 days of your own

  • You drive the whole route yourself
  • Fuel and tolls come to roughly €0.25 per kilometre
  • Plus a hotel night on the way and a flight back
  • And two to three days of your own time

Frequently asked

What people ask about this route

Not for Manchester. That EPC PLC registration requirement applies only to the London zone. If the car does not pass through London, the ten-day wait plays no part here.

The announced charge for Greater Manchester was not introduced for private cars. Because British rules on this point have changed several times in recent years, I check before every run how things stand and put it in the indication if something does apply after all.

A long driving day: about 830 kilometres plus the crossing. With an early departure your car is there the same evening.

Usually on the Shuttle. On this run that weighs more heavily than to London, because another three hundred kilometres follow and a missed ferry then costs half a day.

Yes. Anywhere in north-west England is within reach of the same run. Give me the address at booking and I will include it in the indication.

By air from Manchester Airport, which has daily direct flights to the Netherlands. That ticket is in the price.

The other direction

And if your car needs to come back from Manchester?

Bringing your car back from Manchester costs ± € 1.170. Going out is ± € 1.380, so the return works out cheaper: the last driving day ends at my own door, with no hotel night at the far end and no flight home. I fly out and drive it back to you.
