Netherlands → Málaga

The drive nobody wants to make twice a year

For most Dutch second-home owners, Málaga is where the Costa del Sol begins: the airport you land at within three hours, with the coast running west (Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola) and east (Rincón de la Victoria, Torrox, Nerja). The house is there. The car usually isn't.

The drive down is 2,260 kilometres. Once, it's an adventure; twice a year it's two lost weekends, a hotel night on the road and an arrival at exactly the moment the holiday was supposed to start. So I drive it: you book your flight to Málaga, I collect the car at your door and hand it back at your door on the coast.

No open trailer with strangers' cars alongside, no depot where your key changes hands three times. One driver, from your driveway to yours down there.

Who drives this route

Why cars go to Málaga

Requests for this route almost always come from one of three situations.

Winter residents

The car goes south in October or November and comes back in March or April. You fly, I drive. Booking both legs as one assignment costs considerably less per kilometre than two separate one-way trips.

Second-home owners on the eastern coast

Nerja, Torrox, Frigiliana and the Axarquía sit thirty to sixty minutes beyond the airport. Renting per stay adds up quickly, and having your own car there means no arrival ever starts at a rental desk.

Long stays and relocations

Anyone going to Spain for six months or more wants their own car, their own seat position, their own service history, their own tyres. That car goes down once and stays.

The route

Netherlands → Málaga in two driving days

I take the western route: through France to Bordeaux, across the Spanish border at Irún, then south over the Meseta. ± 2,260 km, with one overnight stop near Burgos or Madrid.

  1. 01

    Collection and documentation

    Your address · 30–45 min

Before departure I make a 360° condition report: all round, wheels, interior, odometer and fuel level, photographed. You sign the transport agreement and keep a copy. Then the car leaves, and you head for the airport.

  2. 02

    Netherlands → Bordeaux

    Day 1 · ± 1,000 km

Via Antwerp and Paris or Reims to south-western France. This is the most toll-heavy stretch and also the fastest: quiet, well-maintained autoroutes.

  3. 03

    Bordeaux → Burgos or Madrid

    Day 1/2 · ± 600 km

Past Biarritz and over the border at Irún, then the climb onto the Spanish plateau. I stop for the night here. The car is parked in a guarded or enclosed car park, never left at the roadside.

  4. 04

    Meseta → Málaga

    Day 2 · ± 650 km

Via Madrid and Bailén through the Despeñaperros pass into Andalusia, then the final descent to the coast. Arrival is usually in the late afternoon.

  5. 05

    Delivery and handover

    Your address in Spain

A second 360° report on arrival, and the key handed personally to you or whoever you nominate. Then I fly back from Málaga, that return flight appears as a separate line on your invoice, at cost.

What matters on this route

Recurring events

Two periods in which Málaga is a different city. The Feria de Málaga runs from 15 to 22 August in 2026 and opens with fireworks on the night of the 14th: ten nights with the centre packed. And Semana Santa, which moves with Easter and during which the processions close the historic centre for days. There is also the Festival de Málaga, one of the most important film festivals in Spain. If you are taking delivery in those weeks we agree an address outside the centre or I plan around the day, otherwise your car ends up a kilometre and a half from your front door.

Tolls are mostly French

The French leg is the largest variable cost of the trip. In Spain, most of the route into Andalusia is toll-free, which makes Málaga better value per kilometre than the distance suggests. All tolls are passed on at cost, with receipts.

Return flights here are cheap

Málaga has year-round direct connections to Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Rotterdam and Brussels. That is exactly why a one-way trip to this coast is efficient: my return costs a plane ticket, not a second drive.

August needs different planning

In high summer Andalusia runs well above 35°C, and French autoroutes fill up on July and August Saturdays. I depart mid-week then and drive the southern leg in the morning, better for the car and for the arrival time.

Kilometres on your own car

A one-way trip adds ± 2,260 kilometres. That is a real trade-off, and for some cars a trailer is the better choice. For a car that is going to be used anyway, the alternative weighs against it: no loading ramp, no straps, no days on a transporter among unfamiliar vehicles.

Delivery along the whole coast

Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Rincón de la Victoria, Torrox, Nerja, Frigiliana, all within the trip. If your address lies further west towards Marbella or Estepona, that is an hour more.

Compare your options

The same car from the Netherlands to Southern Europe, three ways, three price tags. With a trailer, watch which one you are comparing: riding along on a scheduled line from depot to depot is the cheapest there is, but a transporter making the run for your car alone charges per kilometre and bills the truck’s journey home as well. Between those two extremes sits a factor of five.

± 10 working days, or 2–3

  • €675 – 850 if your car rides along on a scheduled line
  • But then you take it to the depot yourself and collect it yourself on arrival, ten working days later
  • If the transporter runs for your car alone, door to door, it goes per kilometre — open ± €0.95, enclosed ± €1.35 — and the truck’s journey home counts too. Utrecht–Marbella comes to ± €4,500

Frequently asked

About the route to Málaga

Two driving days. The route is roughly 2,260 kilometres and I cover around 1,150 kilometres per day, with one overnight stop near Burgos or Madrid. Collect on a Monday morning and the car is on the Costa del Sol on Tuesday afternoon.

Yes, and it is the most requested variant on this route. Booking both legs as one assignment (say, down in November and back in April) is clearly better value per kilometre than two separate one-way trips. Dates can stay approximate well in advance and be fixed later.

Yes. The whole Costa del Sol and the Axarquía fall within this trip, from Torremolinos in the west to Nerja and Frigiliana in the east. I deliver to the address you give me, not to a depot or collection point.

A fixed driver fee of € 650–800 plus the travel expenses: fuel, tolls, my return flight and one hotel night. Those expenses are calculated up front and included in the fixed price, with no mark-up. The calculator at the top of this page gives an indication for your own address.

Yes. This route runs just as often in reverse, for instance when a second home is sold or a car is bought in Spain. The method is identical: condition report at collection, daily updates, personal handover in the Netherlands.

Your own motor policy remains primary in principle, also when someone else drives, provided they hold a valid licence and your policy permits the car to be driven by someone engaged to do so for payment. That is not a given: some private policies exclude professional use. I check it beforehand; it is one of my three intake questions. Do also notify your insurer briefly beforehand. On top of that, every trip is covered by a signed transport agreement, with the 360° condition report at departure and arrival as the record of its state.

How I safeguard your car

Clear about cover

Your own policy stays leading. Damage caused by me: I cover the excess up to €500. What I do not have is stated just as plainly.

Signed transport agreement

Every arrangement — excess, route, planning — recorded in writing beforehand.

360° condition report

Your car's condition fully documented with photos, before and on delivery.

The other direction

And if your car needs to come back from Málaga?

Bringing your car back from Málaga costs ± € 2.240. Going out is ± € 2.450, so the return works out cheaper: the last driving day ends at my own door, with no hotel night at the far end and no flight home. I fly out and drive it back to you.
