1,180 kilometres to Turin: one driving day to the city the Italian motor industry came from.

Why this route

One driving day to the foot of the Alps

Turin lies about 1,180 kilometres away, roughly the same as Milan and Lake Como: one long driving day, no hotel night on the road. The route runs through Germany to Basel, over the Gotthard, and then west across the Po valley past Milan into Piedmont.

Of all Italian cities, Turin is the one where the car itself is the subject. Fiat and Lancia come from here, the Museo Nazionale dell'Automobile on the Corso Unità d'Italia holds one of the largest car collections in Europe, and the Lingotto — the old Fiat factory with the test track on the roof — still stands, now as an exhibition and shopping complex. That also explains why cars travel to and from here from the Netherlands.

Practically, Turin has the same pitfall as the rest of Italy: a ZTL Centrale in the historic centre, with cameras on the approach roads. Less severe than Florence, but the fines are the same. I check per delivery address what applies.

Who sends a car here

Four situations where this works

Turin is a working city with a classic-car scene around it. That produces a different kind of run from Tuscany or the Côte d'Azur.

Buying a car or having one collected

Piedmont is one of the regions in Europe where the classic-car trade genuinely sits. Anyone buying a car here usually does not want it back on an open trailer, and driving two days out and two days back is not an option for most people. I fly out, check it over at the seller and drive it home.

Skiing in the Piedmontese Alps

Sestriere, Bardonecchia and the rest of the Via Lattea are an hour to ninety minutes from Turin. For anyone with an apartment there or spending a season, having the car brought ahead is more practical than crossing the Alps yourself with snow chains and luggage.

Fairs at the Lingotto

The Lingotto Fiere complex is in use all year: the Salone Internazionale del Libro in May, Artissima at the Oval in November, and the Salone Auto Torino in the Parco del Valentino. In those weeks hotels are dearer and arriving in the centre is slower.

A house or longer stay in Piedmont

The Langhe, Barolo, Alba: the wine country begins an hour south of the city and is unmanageable without a car. For anyone staying several weeks, bringing your own car costs less than hiring and involves considerably less hassle.

The route

Eleven hundred and eighty kilometres, in one day

The same first half as to Milan, with a westward turn across the Po valley.

  1. 01

Arranging the vignette and zone access

    Before departure

The Swiss vignette of CHF 40 goes on the windscreen; without it the fine is CHF 200. For Turin I check whether the delivery address falls inside the ZTL Centrale and what hours apply, so that delivery happens outside it or with permission.

  2. 02

    The Netherlands to Basel

    ± 600 km

Through Germany on the A3 and A5 past Cologne, Frankfurt and Karlsruhe. No toll for cars in Germany, so fuel only.

  3. 03

    Basel to the Gotthard

    ± 230 km through Switzerland

From Basel via Lucerne to the Gotthard tunnel and into Ticino. On holiday Saturdays there can be a queue of hours before the tunnel; then I take the San Bernardino or leave earlier.

  4. 04

    West across the Po valley

    ± 180 km

Via Chiasso to Milan and then west on the A4 to Turin. Flat and straight, with Italian tolls by ticket at the barriers. From here the Alps stand on the horizon. Turin sits right up against them.

  5. 05

    Delivery and the way back

    End of the day

I deliver to the agreed address, with the zone access arranged. Then I fly home from Turin Caselle or Milan Malpensa, depending on the connection that day. That ticket is in the price.

Practical points

Turin's ZTL Centrale

Turin, like virtually every Italian city of any size, has a Zona a Traffico Limitato in the historic centre, with cameras on the approach roads recording every plate. The fines are the same as elsewhere in Italy: € 80 to € 335 per violation, and several cameras on one trip can mean several fines. The zone is less extensive than Florence's, but that does not make it less strict. Give me the delivery address at booking and I will work out what is needed.

The Swiss vignette

The fastest route to Turin runs over the Gotthard, so through Switzerland. A motorway vignette is compulsory there: CHF 40, and without one you risk CHF 200. I arrange it in advance. In winter weather the route can also run via the Mont Blanc tunnel; I make that choice on the conditions, not on the map.

Turin as a motor city

The Museo Nazionale dell'Automobile on the Corso Unità d'Italia is one of the largest car collections in Europe, and the Lingotto — the Fiat factory with the test track on the roof — can still be visited. For anyone having a car brought out here because they want to drive it rather than put it on a trailer, that is no coincidence: this is the city that idea came from.

Recurring events

The Lingotto Fiere complex runs all year: the Salone Internazionale del Libro in May, which fills the city for a week, and Artissima at the Oval in November. There is also the Salone Auto Torino in the Parco del Valentino, an open-air car show in the park along the Po. In those weeks hotel prices climb and the centre is busier than usual, so I plan more generously.

The mountains are round the corner

Sestriere, Bardonecchia and the Via Lattea are an hour to ninety minutes from the city, and the Langhe with Alba and Barolo about an hour south. Delivery there sits on the same run and normally costs nothing extra. In winter I allow for the chain requirement on the mountain roads.

Compare your options

The same car from the Netherlands to Southern Europe, three ways, three price tags. With a trailer, watch which one you are comparing: riding along on a scheduled line from depot to depot is the cheapest there is, but a transporter making the run for your car alone charges per kilometre and bills the truck’s journey home as well. Between those two extremes sits a factor of five.

Cars stacked on a car-transporter truck on the motorway

Trailer transport

€675 – 4,500 excl.

± 10 working days, or 2–3

  • €675 – 850 if your car rides along on a scheduled line
  • But then you take it to the depot yourself and collect it yourself on arrival, ten working days later
  • If the transporter runs for your car alone, door to door, it goes per kilometre — open ± €0.95, enclosed ± €1.35 — and the truck’s journey home counts too. Utrecht–Marbella comes to ± €4,500
  • Luggage in the car usually not allowed

Driving it yourself

± €0.25 per km + your time

± 2 – 3 days of your own

  • You drive the whole route yourself
  • Fuel and tolls come to roughly €0.25 per kilometre
  • Plus a hotel night on the way and a flight back
  • And two to three days of your own time

Drive-it-Back

± €2,040 excl. for Utrecht–Marbella

± 3 days

  • One dedicated driver drives your own car, door to door
  • Half what a transporter charges to make that same run for your car alone
  • On the day you choose, not the day the line departs
  • Load the car with your own luggage

Frequently asked

What people ask about this route

That depends on the address and the time. Turin has a ZTL Centrale in the historic centre with camera enforcement and fines from € 80 to € 335 per violation. Give me the delivery address and the registration at booking and I will work out what applies.

1,180 kilometres is one long driving day, so with a morning departure your car is there that evening or the next morning. There is no hotel night in the price.

For the fastest route, yes: it runs over the Gotthard. CHF 40, and without one the fine is CHF 200. I arrange it in advance.

Yes. Both are an hour to ninety minutes from Turin and on the same run. In winter I allow for the chain requirement on the mountain roads.

Yes, that is one of the standing reasons for this route. I fly out, check the car over at the seller, photograph its condition and drive it home. You do not have to travel for it.

By air from Turin Caselle or Milan Malpensa, depending on the connection that day. That ticket is in the price.

And if your car needs to come back from Turin?

Bringing your car back from Turin costs ± € 1.480. Going out is ± € 1.700, so the return works out cheaper: the last driving day ends at my own door, with no hotel night at the far end and no flight home. I fly out and drive it back to you.
